A Zen student wearing robes and a rakusu (left) beside their teacher in a Zen Master’s traditional robes, no longer wearing the rakusu (right). It should be noted that red robes are (in many traditions) worn by masters and not students, apart from the the Vajrayana sect. The color of the robes and kesa/ rakasu is significant in the wider Buddhist community.

COMMITTING TO THE ZEN BUDDHIST PATH

Find a space and time where you can be alone for a few moments. Invite the sacred into that space by placing an image of the Buddha that you find inspiring before you. If you wish you can light candles or offer a stick of incense.

Clear your mind and focus on your resolve to commit yourself to the exploration of the enlightened path of the Buddha.

Placing your hands in the gassho position (hands held together at chest height, palm to palm, with the fingers pointing upward) recite the Threefold Refuge three times: I take refuge in the Buddha, in awakening itself.

I take refuge in the Dharma, the teachings themselves.

I take refuge in the Sangha, wise friends too on the path.
